Lancashire hotpot originally came from lancashire during the days of heavy industrialisation. Many made this because it was easy to make and cheap to feed everybody, this could be left on a low heat to slowly cook while at work ready for when they got home. Traditionally this was made with either mutton or lamb with sliced potatoes, carrots and onions. Hotpot is frequently listed in many lancashire pub menus and is a well known on the itv soap coronation street while being served in the local pub 'Rovers Return' by Betty Turpin. Some serve with beetroot, red cabbage or even lancashire cheese.

The image has a very clean finish due to using white colours, this makes the hotpot stand out and look appetising.
I like the white wooden surface the subject is sat on, rustic old effect but looks clean and really adds character.

Fisherman's friend was developed by a pharmacist called James lofthouse in 1865 in fleetwood, lancashire. They are strong menthol lozenges designed to relieve coughs, colds etc while working in exteme wheather conditions such as fisherman.
They were named 'friends' due to fisherman referring to them as this.
They are very much the same now as they were when created all those years ago, the packaging has been lined with foil but eveything else is kept to the orginal design.
Sugar free lozenges are easy to recongnise due to the strips across the packaging. These can be bought in various flavours around the world such as Aniseed, Lemon, Mint, Blackcurrent etc.
They used a ship to represent the workmanship of the fisherman.

Thwaites Brewery was founded in 1807 by Daniel Thwaites. The brewery still operates today and in original town of Blackburn, Lancashire.  One of the worlds best known brewerys.
They have various lagers and bitters available, some of the well known are Hobnobber, Old Dan, 13 Guns, good elf etc. Thwaites is a family business that has been past down the generations. The logo has been changed several times but the most recent logo has ridden of its iconic shire horses.
Beer was delivered on horse and carrage during the earlier years and are still kept in the stables near the factory of Blackburn.
Thwaites have won awards for European star awards in 2011, lancaster bomber won gold medal in english bitter and wainwright ale won silver medal in english style golden ale, great british pub awards in 2011 and many more.
Thwaites Wainwright has been the official sponsor of Lancashire County Cricket Club since 2005.

Black pudding looks like a sausage but is made of dried blood of all types of cattle depending on the country.
Traditionally england use the blood of a pig and oatmeal and is commonally served with an English full breakfast and in some areas of England and Ireland is also served in chip shops. The english and the irish took this tradition around the world.
Black pudding can be eaten cooked and uncooked and it is often grilled, fried or boiled while in its skin.
It is considered a delicacy within the north west of England and especially in lancashire.
Bury and Ramsbottom is the home of  'The worlds Black Pudding Throwing Championships' and is known for being boiled and served with malt vinegar wrapped in paper.
Many other chip shops often batter the pudding and serve it with chips.
Ingredients often include:  meat, fat, sweet potato, cornmeal, suet, bread, onion, barley, oatmeal and chestnuts.

Eccles cakes are commonly round filled with currents and surrounded by a flakey pastry with butter and sugar sprinkled on the top.

My Packshots

This is a pack shot I created in the studio, I bought a fishermans friend tin because I thought it would be more attractive to the eye than the original packaging. This product can be quite hard to find but I was able to find it on website amazon. I shot this using soft boxes to create a clean white background and everything lit upon the subject. The silver kept over exposing but I changed my settings to prevent this.

This image was created similar to the Fisherman's friend tin, The purple stripes look grainy but this is how they are naturally on the product itself. I took several different shots of the alternative flavours. I didn't find it too hard to get the white upon white to stand out.

Ideas of pocket contents

Some examples of the kind of equipment I could use in my images. I particularly like the ones in the tackle box but its not really the pocket thing I'm looking for.

My Advert shots

These are all my contact sheets of the shoots I have done throughout this project.
I tried many different techniques and surfaces to get to the final outcome you see today.

This is one of my preferred images, I did several shots but after a discussion with richard we decided it would be better to take some photographs using the micro lens to created a stronger depth of field behind the fishermans friend and so this is one of the outcomes.
I used some of my uncles fishing equipment and bought several attractive fishing lures from go outdoors to create this shot.
The background was created using a fishing net to keep with the theme and I used a snoot light attachment to give it a more dark sea blue feel to the image. My idea is a pocket contents of the people who would use Fishermans friend and this is to represent fishermen.

Again this was created similar to the one previous but I used different lures in the background to give it a different effect. These were some of the object bought from go outdoors. My tutor Richard sugguested I should remove the expiry date from the side of tin because it dates the image. I Forgot to do this.

This was created using chipboard that would be used on building sites. Chip board could be using while cementing, walls etc.
Again another pocket contents image and this one is representing builders.
Builders work outside in many weather conditions who possibily use fishermans friend for colds. For this image I decided to use a different fishersman friend packaging to create something different from the previous shot. I used a tape measure and pencil because you would find this in their pockets.
I used natural light from the outdoors to create this image and a macro lens to get a strong depth of field.

Contextual Shots

I visited fleetwood twice and also rang fishermans friend during the beginning of december, they eventually replied to the answer phone message I left during the beginning december on the 6 January saying "We are returning the call regarding taking photographs inside the factory, the answer to that is no. Under no circumstances do we allow photographs to be taken inside." I was approached by the security guard when I visited fleetwood during december and was told I should come back during the week but again wasnt allowed inside. I did manage to take a few photographs of the outside but was limited to the frontal view because the factory was secured with fencing.
